Dublin is officially known in Irish as Baile Átha Cliath (pronounced Ballya –Aha-Clia) The english translation of Dublin from the Irish Dubh Linn meaning “black pool” The city originally founded as a viking settlement has gone through many transitions and is presently one of the major cities for industry and sciences with a rich historical past. Dublin has the prestigious honor as the European City of Science in 2012
Within Dublin, there are many sights to see while exploring the city by foot. From the museums, galleries, shops, restaurants and bars, Dublin offers each visitor options to suit their needs.

Exploring Ireland 
If you step outside of Dublin, you have an abundant choice of destinations while in Ireland. Ensure to visit the Cultural Tours section as we have arranged some day tours and excursions delegates and accompanying persons may wish to avail of.
Suggested Visiting destinations;
- Wicklow the Garden of Ireland is a short journey south of the city. Visit Powerscourt Gardens or Glendalough.
- Take a trip to Newgrange in Meath- this location is older than the pyramids in Egypt and county Meath is known as the seat of the ancient High kings of Ireland
- Galway, West of Ireland- if you have time or are extending your stay in Ireland- drive, train or bus to the “City of the Tribes” Galway. This city has a tradition of music, laughter and fun. While in the west take time to explore the not to be missed breathtaking Cliffs of Moher.
- South West of Ireland
- Kerry offers some of the most varied scenary of Ireland with the Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula and Killarney National Park
- Cork, Kerrys neighbour is where you can kiss the Blarney stone, learn about the history of Jameson Whiskey or visit Fota Wildlife Park.
- Northern Ireland, UK- if you have the time, ensure to visit the Giants Causeway in County Antrim- you are travelling to this culturally unique area with the blend of Irish and British. See the beauty of the causeway and ensure to make time to visit Belfast enroute.
About the Congress Venue
We have selected the Dublin Convention Centre as the location for the IWA World Congress on Water, Climate and Energy 2012. Positioned in the exciting Spencer Dock area on the banks of the River Liffey, The Convention Centre Dublin is Ireland’s new world-class, purpose-built international conference and event venue recently opened in 2010.
The venue is within walking distance of many of the selected congress hotels, tourism destinations and public transport routes.
